A fire at the Potter’s Cay Dock on Monday morning destroyed several vessels in the harbour.
Officer In Charge of Saturation Patrol & National Events Operations, Assistant Commissioner of Police Damien Robinson was on the scene and gave details of the incident. He said, “upon arrival we met a boat just to the rear of me engulfed with fire. The firefighters than went in to strict operation mode to extinguish those fire. Thus far we think was have about four to five vessels that have been destroyed by fire.”
Also on the scene was President of the Potter’s Cay Dock Fish, Fruit and Vegetable Vendors Association, Ormanique Bowe, who gave more details about one of the vessels destroyed in the blaze. She said, “unfortunately, the morning, the boat the caught a fire is a boat that was already fueled up and ready to leave today. So that means all of their groceries and everything has been lost.”
Bowe also addressed the issue of derelict vessels at the dock saying, “transport now is cleaning up the area with the derelict boats and debris in the water and stuff like that to make space for boats out here on Potter’s Cay. Because sometimes you have the fishing boat aligned with the mailboat and all of that, you know, and it is hazardous because if one catch a fire, all of them will catch a fire. Thank God it was early this morning we are able to catch it and, you know, the boats were contained and it didn’t affect the stalls this time. The last fire out here was a boat and it popped loose and explode onto the dock and we lost four.”
Acting Permanent Secretary in the Minister of Agriculture and Marine Resources, Neil Campbell visited the dock and said that a meeting with stakeholders is in the works.
