Shadow Minister of Social Services, Sen. Hon. Maxine Seymour spoke with ZNS News to voice her concerns about budget cuts in the ministry’s budget as debate of the 2023-2024 mid year budget is set to begin. She spoke specifically to the reallocation of funds to pay for a memorial service for the late Hon. Obadiah Wilchcombe.
Senator Seymour said, “we understand, based on the release of the mid-year budget report, that $30,000 came from social services as well. Twenty five thousand of which came from the Commission For Persons With Disabilities and that money was reallocated to pay for the memorial for the late minister, the Hon. Obadiah Wilchcombe, who of course served this country exemplary. There was an elaborate memorial held at Baha Mar for the minister and those funds came directly from social services from persons with disabilities who actually need money and the government needs to be placing greater priority on retrofitting government buildings so that they are accessible for persons with disabilities.”
