Deputy Prime Minister, the Hon. Chester Cooper was questioned by reporters about when a by election will be called to fill the Golden Isles seat left vacant after the passing of the Late Hon. Vaughn Miller on Thursday.
Mr. Cooper said the government is currently focused on providing support to Mr. Miller’s family and constituents. He also told reporters that Prime Minister Davis would have more to say on the matter.
The Deputy Prime Minister and other government officials were attending the opening of Kings College Lodge in western New Providence. Also on hand was Leader of the Opposition and the Free National Movement, the Hon. Michael Pintard who did not indicate whether his party would contest a by-election if called.
He did, however, call for the holding of a general election. Pintard said, “it would be interesting to see whether or not this government is prepared to again as they did in West Grand Bahama spend over, we believe, $10 million on one seat while there are many roofs that are still leaking in West Grand Bahama. Many houses are compromised in different ways. The administration center is not fully open. The school is not fully open.”
He continue saying, “Bahamians have real life bread and butter issues that the government needs to dedicate resources to, a general election would give one party or another a new mandate and so he ought to go to a general election.”
Vaughn Miller, who also served as Minister of Environment and Natural Resources, died at age 64.
