Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Tourism, Investments and Aviation, the Hon. Chester Cooper was on hand Monday as the Levy Building on Bay Street was demolished.
Cooper told ZNS News the building that once housed the Ministry of Agriculture and BAMSI had been condemned for a long time and its demolition is progress. He said, “this is the thirteenth building that we are demoing here in downtown. It’s a signal of revitalization, rebirth and I hope that this demo is the beginning really of the transformation of this space. It’s an iconic space. We hope that the Levy name will continue in whatever comes here afterwards.”
According to the tourism minister the demolished building will be replaced with trees and parking in the short term. “Medium, long term we hope to go out for requests for proposals for Bahamians to redevelop this site and I foreshadow that it could be residences, a mixed use development with some retail, hotel, overall views of the harbour and Atlantis is simply phenomenal.”
Cooper shared that he is positive about the future of the site.
