There have been approximately fifteen traffic accidents recorded on the island of Eleuthera since the beginning of this year, one of which was fatal.
Officer In Charge of Eleuthera Traffic Division, Superintendent Franklyn Neely spoke with ZNS News over the weekend to provide an update traffic incidents and explain what is being done to curb the numbers.
According to Neely the cause of accidents is most often a combination of speeding and alcohol use. He said “the demographic of persons involved in these accidents are mostly males and I can say there were a few tourist related accidents. They tend to adopt the habit of driving on the right side of the street as opposed to driving on the left side of the street. We have encouraged those car rental agencies to put signs in vehicle and just to remind those persons that in The Bahamas we drive on the left side of the street.”
Superintendent Neely said most of the serious accidents are occurring in the central and northern districts of the island. He explained his public education to assist in decreasing the number of traffic accidents. “We’re gonna continue with our town meetings to sensitize the public. We’re gonna continue with our road checks to enforce all the traffic laws in The Bahamas. We’ve also spoken to the firefighters, the ambulance drivers. We have spoken to the Ministry of Health so that we can put on a traffic fatality simulation to sensitize the public even more.”
Neely appealed Eleuthera motorists to wear their seat belts, obey the speed limit and never drive under the influence.
