A fire damaged the Bahamas Power and Light power plant in Fresh Creek, Andros on Sunday that resulted in electricity outages on the island.
BPL Regional Manager, Northern Region and Family Island Division, Marvin Green provided details of the incident. He said, “unfortunately we had a trailer unit that caught fire and was completely demolished along with one of the building sheds. But the team has been fighting feverishly and they were able to secure the main power station. Of course it was still impacted and rendered out of service but they were about to safe the structure and the additional units on the inside. We would have lost some switch gear, some cabling obviously, but at least the team, through their efforts, were able to secure the building. So we’re working now to mobilize and bring in assets from sister islands and other vendors to make sure that we can get this situation addressed as quick as possible. We do have intentions to try and feed from the other north station.”
Firefighters from the Atlantic Undersea Test and Evaluation Center (AUTEC) base were the first on the scene and assisted to extinguish the blaze.
Also on the scene was Member of Parliament for South Andros and Mangrove Cay, the Hon. Leon Lundy. He told ZNS News he flew to Central Andros to view the situation first hand. “I want to also thank personally the team from AUTEC Base. I also want, at this time, to specially thank the community that came out. We had water tankers come down and they assisted with getting the tanks filled and refilled.”
According to a statement from BPL power was restored to all areas affected by the fire at 10pm on Sunday.
