A contract signing ceremony was held at the Office of the Prime Minister on Tuesday for the renovation of the airports at Farmer’s Cay and Staniel Cay in Exuma.
Prime Minister, the Hon. Philip Davis was at the signing and said the works will strengthen travel and open clearer pathways between our people and opportunity.
Work is expected to be done on the terminals and runways at the airports. Minister of Works and Family Island Affairs, the Hon. Clay Sweeting said, “the project involves the reconstruction of the existing apron pavement areas. In regards to Farmer’s Cay it will be 50 feet wide by 2,170 feet long. In Staniel Cay, 70 feet wide by 2,827 feet long. The terminal in Farmer’s Cay would be roughly 50 feet by 50 feet wide.”
Rowdy Boys Construction will work along with A & E Construction to complete the airport projects. Deputy Prime Minister and Member of Parliament for Exuma and Ragged Island, the Hon Chester Cooper defended the contract being awarded to Rowdy Boys after suggestions that they received preferential treatment.
Mr. Cooper said, “this is a competitive bidding process as you might know. Sometimes you win some, some you lose some. The reality is that that process ensures that the Bahamian people win.”
Rowdy Boys Chief Financial Officer, Jalen Knowles expressed that the company understands the responsibility that comes with such projects and are committed to delivering quality work and meeting timelines.
The contracts are valued at more than $6 million.
