Government officials led by Prime Minister, the Hon. Philip Davis traveled to Mayaguana over the weekend to open the new airport terminal on the island of Mayaguana.
The 3,200 square foot building is part of the government’s Family Island Airport Renaissance Project. During a commissioning ceremony held at the site Prime Minister Davis told attendees, “this new terminal standing before us is a declaration of the importance of Mayaguana to our plans for development. It is a declaration that every Bahamian regardless of which island they call home deserves world class infrastructure and a government that keeps its word and delivers.”
Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Tourism, Investments and Aviation, the Hon. Chester Cooper was also on hand. He spoke with reporters at the event about increasing economic growth on the island. “We want to ensure that we’re reducing the cost of shipping by ensuring that supplies come as directly as possible to the Caribbean rather than going to the USA and then coming back. So I think that is a part of what we envisaged in the Blueprint For Change, the development of a port here in the south and I believe it’s a magnificent opportunity for Mayaguanians to benefits as a result of the development that it will bring.”
The new terminal contains 30 passenger seats, office space for Bahamasair and other carriers, vendor spaces and a police station with a holding cell. Construction was funded by a public private partnership between the government and Mayaguana Island Developers.
Mayaguana Island Developers Chairman, Stephen Roy spoke at the commissioning ceremony about the value of the island. He said, “nobody knows Mayaguana and the value is you can land a plane here and you can be on the most beautiful beach in The Bahamas in five minutes. So we gatta get that story out.”
The new terminal cost approximately $2 million to construct.
