Minister of Works and Family Island Affairs, the Hon. Clay Sweeting addressed this year’s Exuma Business Outlook on the island’s infrastructural upgrades.
Sweeting told those gathered at last week’s event that phase one of the $62 million Exuma Road Improvement Project is 92% complete. He said, “remaining works include two and a half foot elevation with culverts in coordination with utility companies. And I’m glad to announce that phase two would begin in early 2026 extending south from George Town.”
The minister also spoke about the government’s bridge repair program which includes three bridges on Exuma, three on Andros and one in New Providence. “We’ve already had the consultants come and view the docks here in Exuma in April. We’re finalizing those plans and we’re making moves to meet with UCAF funding to fund these projects. to really connect us. A lot of these bridges are dated, they’re old and we must ensure that safety and storm resilience is apart of the infrastructure that we build in our communities,” Sweet
According to the works minister the $34.2 million airside upgrade project at the Exuma International Airport is about 70% complete. A contract has also been signed for the airport in Black Point, Exuma. Sweeting said, “the Black Point dock refurbishment went out for tender. The tender is complete and the contract is now signed for a $6 million docking facility there in Black Point to modernize the facilities for not just trade but for fishing and for tourism.”
