Minister of Innovation and National Development and Member of Parliament for Fort Charlotte, the Hon. Sebastian Bastian delivered his first presentation in the House Of Assembly on Monday during the annual budget debate.
The minister laid out plans for his new ministry including the drafting of artificial intelligence legislation. He said, “this legislation in turn will establish the Artificial Intelligence Authority, a standing institution that will govern the safety, the responsible use of the technology, to set the guardrails that protect our people and ensure as AI grows more powerful over the oversight of our people.”
According to the minister the government also plans to implement a national identification card. Bastian said, “a trusted and secure credential that will let Bahamians access services, sign documents and receive what they are owed, simple and safely. Less time, stronger protection against fraud and a government that recognizes who you are wherever you go. We will build it carefully with privacy and security at its core because a credential this important must earn the public trust.”
