Prime Minister, the Hon. Philip Davis highlighted the island of Grand Bahama as a model for progress during his contribution to the 2026/2027 budget debate in the House Of Assembly on Wednesday.
There is more than $3.5 billion in major projects currently underway on the island. Mr. Davis said Minister for Grand Bahama, the Hon. Ginger Moxey is overseeing a period of renewed activity on the island. “Visitor arrivals have surged by 91.2%, passing one million, making Grand Bahama the fastest growing destination in the country,” he said.
The government recently acquired of the Grand Bahama Power Company. The move is part of major changes in the energy sector there. Rate adjustments have led to consumers receiving significantly lower electricity bills. During his presentation Mr. Davis commended Minister Moxey for championing energy relief for Grand Bahamians. He said, “her people now feel the base rate eliminated for households using under 200 KwH. She has begun cleaning land for new homes in the Heritage Subdivision and issued demolition orders on derelict eyesores in Garden Villas to make way for rent-to-own homes under the Rebirth Program.”
Plans are also in place for the construction of the Afro-Caribbean Marketplace and Logistics Center on the site of the former International Bazaar. Mr. Davis said of Minister Moxey, “she is transforming the old symbols of stalled development. The International Bazaar and Royal Oasis into a future Afro-Marketplace and she has made the Beautiful Grand Bahama cleanup a permanent mandate offering second chances and a path to steady employment for Bahamians who simply needed someone to believe in them.”
Among the other major projects on the island are the redevelopment of the Grand Bahama International Airport, the MSC Cruise Port and the Grand Lucayan Resort Project.
