On Wednesday, May 6, 2026, the Ministry of Agriculture and Marine Resources officially rededicated the Grand Bahama Department of Agriculture Animal Control Unit and Public Market facility located on West Mall Drive, Freeport.
In attendance were Minister of Agriculture and Marine Resources, the Hon. Jomo Campbell; Permanent Secretary Neil Campbell; Under Secretary in the Ministry for Grand Bahama, Carol Roach; Deputy Permanent Secretary Julianne Brennan, along with other senior government officials and members within the agricultural and marine ministry.
Minister Campbell stated, “Today is not simply about reopening a building. Today is about reaffirming our commitment to you, the people of Grand Bahama, to our farmers, to our vendors, to our agricultural officers, and to the future of food security across the length and breadth of our country.”
He further emphasised that agriculture has become increasingly important to the country’s economic future and sustainability, noting that continued growth of the industry will depend heavily on preparing and encouraging the next generation to enter the field.
“The future of agriculture cannot survive without a succession plan. We need more young farmers, more young marine scientists, more agri-business owners, more innovators using technology, hydroponics, aquaponics, digital agriculture, and climate-smart solutions to transform this industry into a modern economic engine for The Bahamas,” Minister said.
Minister Campbell explained that the revitalised facility forms part of the ministry’s larger national vision to strengthen food security and economic opportunity. He also stressed the importance of maintaining an effective animal control unit to support public health, safety, and responsible management within communities.
The ceremony concluded with a ribbon cutting, blessing of the building, and tour of the revitalised facility.
