Minister of Works and Family Island Affairs, the Hon. Clay Sweeting was recently part of an assessment delegation visiting the construction site of the Palmetto Point Medical Facility.
Sweeting spoke to reporters about the importance of the facility which is the first of its kind on the family island. He said, “it’s quite a large health care facility to service the people, not just the people in Eleuthera but the guests and the tourists that visit here. So we’re excited about it and to see it actually come to fruition.”
The Minister also spoke the need for such facilities on the family islands. He said, “in a lot of the family island we have satellite clinics. So you’ll have small clinics. You’ll have them in some of the settlements that would service minor issues. So you’ll have nurses there, you’ll have one or two doctors that service the wider island. But what this would do, this would be a central functioning healthcare facility that would provide a delivery unit, pharmaceutical, ambulances and the full genre of things that are needed for healthcare in the islands.”
Contractor John Carey said he hopes the building will be completed within 20 months of the start of construction.
