The National Insurance Board (NIB) released a statement over the weekend warning members of the public of a fraudulent text message circulating claiming that their NIB smart cards had to be renewed before June 2026 by clicking a link.
NIB Director, Dr. Tami Francis said, “we would have issued a public warning to all the media houses. I’ve had an opportunity to see it popping up in several of my WhatsApp groups. So we see that it is making its way out there. We have also placed a message out there on social media. And internally, as I said earlier, our cyber security and our communications teams they are actively monitoring the situation. And I want to also say to the general public to understand that NIB will never send out a text message, unsolicited text message of this type asking for your personal information. All or any communication from NIB will always come through our verified channels through our website or as you come into the Board, our LinkedIn page, through social media or through the media houses.”
The public is advised not to provide any information and to delete the text message if they have received the message. Those who have fallen victim to the message should contact their financial institution.
Dr. Francis said, “we have placed major emphasis into beefing up our cyber security team within the National Insurance Board. We are also working with relevant authorities to assist us in tracing the source of these messages and to disrupt the scam. We also have some very sophisticated applications internally that assist us with this type of malicious events that, I think, hinge on to anything good that we are trying to do through the National Insurance Board.”
