A number of senior Government officials, sports stakeholders and the general public were on hand for the arrival of the Queen’s Baton for the 2022 Commonwealth Games, in Rawson Square, Downtown Nassau, on April 2, 2022. Among the government representatives present were Minister of Youth, Sports and Culture the Hon. Mario Bowleg; Minister of National Security the Hon. Wayne Munroe; Permanent Secretary at the Office of the Governor General Jack Thompson; Minister of State for Legal Affairs the Hon. Jomo Campbell; Permanent Secretary at the Ministry of Youth, Sports and Culture Eugene Poitier; Director of Sports Timothy Munnings and and Chief Sports & Recreations Officer Oria Wood; Parliamentary Secretary at Ministry of Economic Affairs Wayde Watson; and Global Relations Consultant/Sr. Advisor at the Ministry of Tourism, Investments and Aviation Sen the Hon. Randy Rolle. Also taking part in the official ceremony were British High Commissioner Her Excellency Sarah Dickson; Secretary General of the Bahamas Olympic Committee Derron Donaldson, President Rommel Knowles; Vice-President Clarence Rolle; and Special Olympics representatives.
The event in Rawson Square also included a musical performance by Veronica Bishop, and sporting activities, including volleyball, soccer (football) and skipping. The latter offered a chance for senior officials to showcase their jump-rope skills. Later that day, the Baton also passed on Montagu Beach, through a number of Bahamian neighbourhoods; and the Thomas A. Robinson National Stadium. The Queen’s Baton Relay will pass through all 72 Commonwealth countries, and the Baton is slated to next travel to the Turks and Caicos Islands.
