The demolition of shanty town communities in New Providence scheduled to begin on Monday, November 6th went ahead despite one of the communities being destroyed by fire over the weekend.
Officials of the Royal Bahamas Police and Defence Forces, Ministry of Works and the United States Embassy were on the scene as the remaining structures in the Kool Acres shanty town were torn down.
Superintendent Stephen Carey of the Royal Bahamas Police Force said, “during our time in these communities in our operations we have got at least thirty persons who are undocumented. We’ve arrested a person on a warrant of arrest for murder and we have also located several drug houses.” Carey added, “if you’re using these communities to do criminal activities please cease from do so because we will seek you out and find you.”
Ministry of Works Buildings Control Officer, Craig Delancy said the demolition of the Kool Acres property was straight forward.
Residents of the All Saints shanty town, which is also scheduled for demolition, shared their concerns in trying to find alternative accommodations saying it is hard to find appropriate rental properties.
Superintendent Carey said, “this is an ongoing operation by all agencies to clear down and get rid of all unregulated communities in The Bahamas.
