The Government of The Bahamas, through the Ministry of Health & Wellness (MoHW) and the Public Hospitals Authority (PHA), renewed its longstanding partnership with The University of the West Indies (UWI), continuing a collaboration that has helped train generations of physicians and strengthen healthcare services across the country.
The renewed agreement supports the ongoing work of the University of the West Indies School of Clinical Medicine and Research (UWI SCMR), which provides fourth and fifth-year medical students with the opportunity to complete their clinical training in The Bahamas while gaining hands-on experience within the local healthcare system. The programme also supports postgraduate medical education in several specialties, helping to build the skilled workforce needed to meet the country’s healthcare needs.
For more than two decades, UWI SCMR has played an important role in medical education and professional development in The Bahamas. More than 900 physicians and specialists have completed training through the programme, many of whom continue to serve communities throughout The Bahamas and the wider region.
By allowing medical students and postgraduate trainees to complete a significant portion of their education in-country, the partnership has expanded access to medical training, supported workforce development, and contributed to the continued growth of the Bahamian healthcare sector.
The signing marks the third renewal of a partnership that began on May 27, 1997, and was first renewed in 2006. As The Bahamas continues to invest in healthcare and education, the renewed agreement reflects a shared commitment to preparing the next generation of healthcare professionals and strengthening the country’s capacity to deliver quality care for years to come.
