Acting Director of Public Health, Dr. Phillip Swann said on Sunday that there are no confirmed cases of measles in The Bahamas presently. He also said that the ministry is taking seriously the increase in cases across the Americas.
He said, “The Bahamas is a highly connected country and the amount of travel between our country and the United States and the wider region means that we must of necessity remain vigilant against the possibility of an imported case. And while the most recent PAHO (Pan American Health Organization) release speaks to the rising cases of measles in the Americas, we are reminded that those concerned with our last case of imported measles actually traveled from Europe. So we are not only focusing on persons traveling from the Americas. In fact, the European Central For Disease Prevention and Control has reported a significant increase in measles cases above 2023 numbers.”
