Prime Minister, the Hon. Philip Davis toured small businesses in the Fox Hill area this week to promotion the government’s trade diversification initiative.
Accompanying Mr. Davis was Bahamas Trade Commission Chairman, Sen. Hon. Barry Griffin. He told ZNS News, “we’re going directly to Latin America and other factories and plants in the United States for chicken. Other things we’re considering are just sort of the staple foods that Bahamians eat and so we’re looking at rice, we’re looking at milk, we’re looking at other commodities like that that the average Bahamian, regardless of where you live in The Bahamas, you consumer those goods.”
According to the Prime Minister the program is about more than lower the cost of living. He said, “for the last year and a half we’ve been working on this program to determine why it is that the cost of food is so high in The Bahamas. We’re attempting to diversify that product by going into new markets.”
The owner of the Lil Bit Of Everything Convenience Store, Patrice Williams told reporters that everything has gone up by approximately $20 per case.
The government’s trade program offers local businesses the opportunity to access less expensive goods through new trade routes and suppliers.
