The University of The Bahamas (UB) President, Dr. Robert J. Blaine III announced Phase II of the Leading Light Programme, a partnership between UB’s Continuing Education and Lifelong Learning arm and Disney Cruise Lines (DCL). This program, which equipped Eleutherians with job readiness skills and prepared them for economic opportunities, will now expand to Abaco to do the same.
“Through our continued collaboration with DCL, the UB is fulfilling its mission of driving national development by preparing Bahamians particularly in our Family Islands to lead, serve and excel in the industry that anchors our economy,” Dr. Blaine said during a press conference to announce Phase II of the Partnership at the University on Friday, January 16, 2026.
“When we invest in people at the community level, we strengthen the entire country. Every graduate of this programme represents an opportunity to improve the country’s economic future,” the President added.
Provost and Vice-President of Academic Affairs, Dr. Maria Woodside-Oriakhi; Training Specialist, Private and Public Sector Training Department, UB, Dr. Willissa Nyobi Mackey and Regional Public Affairs Director, The Bahamas and Caribbean, DCL, Joey Gaskins also attended the press conference.
Dr. Mackey explained that the programme launched in Eleuthera in 2024, and its expansion into Abaco enables Bahamians to access tertiary-level training that is no longer limited to the capital.
“The first phase of this programme focused specifically on Tourism and Hospitality and strengthened the pipeline of trained professionals in Eleuthera. Now, in Eleuthera and Abaco, we will build on that foundation through this second phase, which centres on three key courses: Technology, Customer Service, and Soft Skills.”
Dr. Mackey said, “While tourism remains our top industry, customer service is not limited to hotels or airports. It should be present in grocery stores, clinics, offices, and daily interactions within our communities.”
She explained that the second phase introduces an innovative, synchronous learning model that allows two islands to be served simultaneously.
“Over 10 weeks, instruction will occur live on one island while participants on the other engage in real time by way of modern technology. We will be alternating weekends and ensuring shared learning, equal access, and a truly level playing field.
“Each cohort will consist of 25 participants per island. All participants will receive a certificate of completion, equivalent to 7.2 continuing education units. The programme is fully funded by DCL, at no cost to students. A stipend is also provided to acknowledge both commitment and effort.”
Dr. Mackey said instruction will be led by carefully selected subject-matter experts—professionals chosen not only for their expertise but also for their ability to teach adults effectively. “This will ensure participants receive the best possible learning experience, regardless of how long they have been out of the classroom.”
Mr. Gaskins said DCL is especially proud to collaborate with UB—the national institution for higher education, workforce development, and lifelong learning.
“UB’s role in strengthening human capital across The Bahamas is essential, and programmes like Leading Light reflect the kind of applied, community-focused education that makes a lasting difference.
“This programme is also part of a broader commitment that DCL has made to the port communities where we operate.”
He said, “In Eleuthera, our presence at Disney Lookout Cay at Lighthouse Point comes with a responsibility to contribute beyond tourism alone.
Mr. Gaskin noted that in the coming weeks, the DCL will be announcing new initiatives that continue to expand on its already robust Corporate Social Responsibility programming in The Bahamas.
