Attorney General, Sen. Hon. Ryan Pinder has filed a submission with the International Court of Justice asking the court to hold countries accountable for their climate policies.
Founder of Earthcare, Gail Woon spoke with ZNS News on the move. She said, “when we get a ruling on this submission from The Bahamas this is going to be so important because hopefully it will level the playing field so that countries like the United States, Russia, China, India, the ones who are emitting the majority of fossil fuels, which in turn become greenhouse gases, they need to be held accountable.”
Woon added, “the ocean’s becoming more acidic which means things like calcium carbonate are going to be worn away by the acid that’s in the ocean. So lobster and crabs those are a big part of our fisheries product so that’s going to effect the economy. With Dorian, basically our island shut down for six months to a year and we still don’t have some of the hotels have not reopened since and tourism is our main economy driver.”
The Environmentalist commended that government for its move to appeal to the International Court of Justice on climate change accountability. “It’s a landmark submission and also they’ve said in their press release they’re going to pursue it on behalf of all the other small island developing states and other states that are going to suffer from the affects of the climate crisis and we’re not the ones causing it.”
Woon also advised of ways that Bahamians can help in the climate change fight like renewable energy, switching to electric vehicle and eating a more plant based diet.
