Bahamas Educators Counsellors and Allied Workers Union (BECAWU) President, Sandra Major weighed in on the latest incident of violence on a school’s campus on Monday.
The principal of McLean’s Town Primary School was hospitalized last week after an altercation with a parent. Major said measures must be put in place to avoid future occurrences. “It’s really disheartening. How do you now say to a teacher or a principal I now want you to go to McLean’s Town? How you do you convince them now that it’s safe?”
The altercation took place on report card day when a male parent stuck the female principal in the head with an iron object. Major said, “I’m sure the government will have something in place in August to make sure that those persons going to school in September will be safe. My heart is really saddened for the principal to know that you were attacked in such as a vicious fashion just doing your job. It’s not a good thing.”
According to the BECAWU President the incident puts the school’s staff in a predicament. After speaking with teachers Major relayed that they are concerned for their safety. She also intends to reach out to the school’s principal.
