Education officials, led by Minister of Education, Science and Technology, the Hon. Chester Cooper, recently visited the Beacon School on the island of Grand Bahama.
The Beacon School is Grand Bahama’s only publicly funded school for students with special needs. Cooper said, “what I saw here today from the creation of crafts to the sporting facilities to T-shirts, there’s a nice little crafts shop, there’s a restaurant with a healthy menu, car wash. I truly didn’t know the Beacon School existed in this form.”
While at the school, Mr. Cooper presented a $2,500 donaion towards the school’s agriculture program on behalf of the Ministry of Agriculture and Marine Resources. He said, “I was delighted to make the contribution of behalf of my colleagues Minister Jomo Campbell. I understand that there is more where that came from. There’s going to be a donation of chickens beginning in September. I was able to see a beautiful farm out back where they’re actually growing herbs and tomatoes and there’s a chicken coop ready for occupancy.”
School Principal, T. T. McKenzie shared her excitement about the visit. “The Beacon School is elated that they came here to visit the school to find out what our challenges are and how they can assist us. We are really excited and happy and we look forward to seeing the changes and getting the assistance that we need to help our students with special needs.”
The Minister recently visited school on the island of Exuma and said such visits will continue.
