Former Prime Minister and former Free National Movement (FNM) Leader, the Rt. Hon. Hubert Ingraham appeared at a FNM rally at the Old Carnival Site in New Providence on Wednesday.
While addressing supporters Mr. Ingraham voiced concern about the amount of persons being caught with fraudulent documents. He said, “I’m aware and concerned that the word spreads around the world the Bahamian passports may not be as safe as we believe they have been enhanced surveillance, scrutiny and shadowing of our documents may result, when any of us go abroad, causing delays, embarrassment and possibly worse.”
The former Prime Minister said it is even more concerning that those found breaking the law are in the country on work permits and that the PLP (Progressive Liberal Party) government does not seem outraged enough by the sale and misuse of the documents.
“I got a work permit and a Bahamian passport. I got a spousal permit and a Bahamian passport. Now this could only be happening by the collusion of some officials and others. Such abuse cannot be excused or tolerated and where the evidence exists such persons ought to be punished,” he said.
During his address FNM Leader, Michael Pintard echoed the sentiments of Mr. Ingraham. He said, “saving it from a government that has put our voter’s cards in foreign hands and if they deny it we ask you why are you not working stop it.”
The FNM took its campaign to Marsh Harbour, Abaco on May 7th and is scheduled to be in Eleuthera on May 8th.
