Prime Minister, the Hon. Philip Davis along with the Minister of Foreign Affairs, the Hon. Fred Mitchell and other government officials traveled to Los Angeles, California to officially open a consulate office there.
A ribbon cutting ceremony was held on Monday at the consulate office located at the Center West Building, 10877 Wilshire Boulevard. The ribbon was cut by Prime Minister Davis along with the widow of Sir Sidney Poitier, Joanna Poitier.
Mayor of Los Angeles, Karen Bass was in attendance at the ceremony. In her remarks she said, “we are thrilled that you have made this investment in our community to deepen the connections between Los Angeles and The Bahamas and to create a bridge for collaboration. Los Angeles, as you know, is a global city. We are a hub for creativity and innovation that attracts visitors and talent for all over the world and that also makes us a hub for international engagement.”
The keynote address was delivered by Prime Minister Davis. He told those in attendance, “the presence of so many consulate offices and embassies in LA speaks to the significance of this city as an economic and cultural hub. The opening of this office reflects the strategic importance of this diplomatic relationship for our people. Considering how many Bahamians are increasingly traveling to the west coast for vacations, shopping trips, school and work it was past time for us to ensure that there was a conveniently located consulate office for them to engage with. Through this office twelve states including Alaska and Hawaii will be serviced providing expanded access to vital consulate services to many Bahamian citizens and members of our diaspora. This office will also house the Ministry of Tourism positioning us in the heart of California, a global epicenter for business and a cultural melting pot.”
The Los Angeles consulate is responsible for the following states: Alaska, Washington, Oregon, Nevada, California, Idaho, Wyoming, Montana, North Dakota, South Dakota, and Nebraska.
Joy Newbold has been named as Consul General for the new office.
