In light of the recent shark attack which resulted in the death of an American tourist, the Minister of Agriculture and Marine Resources was asked to address public outcry about sharks.
The Hon. Jomo Campbell told reporters, “as it stands now the new fisheries does allow a person to kill any marine life in defense of themselves. So you are allow to defend yourself to save your life even if that means the killing of a shark. But, you know, this is a serious issue that we have to deal with as an archipelagic nation, as a nation that invites person to come and participate in our marine life and our marine activities. And so you know its a decision that we’re gonna have to consider at a Cabinet level.”
The Minister was also asked about chumming in Bahamian waters. “What you will see happening in the very near future is the creation of certain posts where we’re going to be having dock supervisors. Plans are now underway for us to initiate a dock manager on Montagu Dock and that should be happening in the very near future as early as January and we want to extend that throughout all of our docks and our waterways in order to regulate this practice.”
