An environmentalist based on the island of Grand Bahama, Joseph Darville is calling for measures to be implemented to prevent shark encounters.
Darville spoke with ZNS News on the topic recently saying, “we don’t need to fear sharks but there are two phenomena that are occasioning this increase in number of shark attacks in our waters. Number one, we must stop chumming for sharks. That is you do not take a boat out and bring a lot of people, bring tourists in a then begin to dump fish overboard. That particular phenomenon says to the sharks they do need to really go out to search for food any longer because occasionally they can easily come up to these boats that are floating on the water and they can find all the food they want.”
The Environmentalist also said that the condition of shark habitats and reefs are prompting them to venture closer to shore. Darville said, “they are searching elsewhere for their food because the reefs are no longer abundant of food, so that’s the other phenomenon. So we have to make sure that we do all in our power to secure our reefs.”
Darville is of the view that without action shark attacks will persist and possibly increase.
