In honor of the 250th anniversary of American independence, the U.S. Embassy Nassau is proud to announce that iconic landmarks across Nassau’s skyline and harbor have joined the Freedom 250 Global Illumination Initiative, coloring the capital red, white, and blue as part of a week-long celebration running from June 28 through July 5, 2026.
The Global Illumination Initiative is a worldwide effort by the U.S. Department of State to commemorate 250 years since the signing of the Declaration of Independence — celebrating the ideals of freedom, democracy, and self-governance that continue to inspire nations everywhere.
The U.S. Embassy’s Shirley Street facade has been illuminated in red, white, and blue since June 26, following the Embassy’s Independence Day celebration, serving as a beacon of the enduring friendship between the United States and The Bahamas. The Embassy is joined by spectacular light displays at Nassau institutions including:
- Baha MarResort—Baha Mar will light up the sky in celebration of 250 years of US Independence, as the front façade of the two largest resort towers are immersed in bright red, white and blue. The display will be visible each evening from 8-10pm, leading up to Baha Mars annual July 4th celebration events, concluding with an incredible fireworks display on the 4th.
- Nassau Cruise Port — Nassau Cruise Port will welcome guests with red, white, and blue illuminations across its Arrivals Building and primary points of entry, creating a festive first impression as visitors enter the heart of Nassau. With more than 137,000 cruise passengers expected across 34 ship calls during the celebration period, the display honors the enduring friendship between The Bahamas and the United States and the vital role American travelers continue to play in our cruise tourism sector.
- Fort Fincastle Water Tower / Antiquities Monuments & Museum Corporation (AMMC)— This symbolic lighting celebrates the enduring friendship and strong diplomatic ties between the Commonwealth of The Bahamas and the United States, reflecting a shared commitment to democracy, freedom, cultural exchange, and mutual respect. Set against the backdrop of one of Nassau’s most historic landmarks, the illuminated water tower serves as a powerful tribute to the historical connections between our two nations and the importance of preserving heritage while fostering international goodwill. The illumination also highlights AMMC’s ongoing commitment to using national monuments as platforms for cultural diplomacy, education, and community engagement. By transforming the Bennett’s Hill Water Tower into a beacon of friendship, this partnership honors the past while strengthening the bonds that continue to unite the people of The Bahamas and the United States for generations to come.
These illuminations are visible across Nassau’s skyline and harbor throughout the week, creating a spectacular, city-wide tribute to 250 years of American independence and the deep and enduring friendship between the United States and The Bahamas.
“The story of America’s 250 years is inseparable from the story of The Bahamas,” said U.S. Ambassador Herschel Walker. “Freedom 250 celebrates this extraordinary bond and reaffirms our commitment to a brighter future together. We are deeply grateful to our Bahamian partners who have joined us in making this historic week truly unforgettable.”
