Minister of Works and Family Island Affairs, the Hon. Clay Sweeting recently gave an update on the National Bridge Connectivity Project. Through the initiative the government is seeking to construct and repair bridges in The Bahamas.
Sweeting said, “we’re looking at a national bridge program where we’re looking at three bridges in Exuma, three bridges in Andros and one bridge in New Providence that connects to the LJM Maritime Academy. We’re looking at transforming how we connect these islands. So this is an exciting time. We have a team from the UK. We have a few acro-bridge throughout The Bahamas, I think two, one in Abaco, one in Spanish Wells that seems and proven to be convenient and budget friendly in the way that they’re constructed.”
Amy Consulting is working with the government on the bridge project. Managing Director, Alex Gilbert spoke to reporters during a site tour at the Ferry Bridge in Exuma. He said, “we’re looking at how we cam replace this bridge for the long term future of The Bahamas. So we’re undertaking some geotechnical work to understand the rock conditions. We undertaking topographical surveys because we’re gonna put a new bridge in here. So we’ll bring in…it’s like a steel bridge that is bolted together and we’ll be able to push that out across the water, dual carriageway and then we’ll be able to take the old bridge down but make sure we’ve got connectivity between the islands.”
