A court in Kenya has blocked the deployment of 1000 Kenyan police officers the Republic of Haiti. The African country was to lead a peacekeeping mission to Haiti to combat the unrest that continues there. The Bahamas had committed to be part of the mission by sending 150 officers of the Royal Bahamas Defence Force.
Prime Minister, the Hon. Philip Davis was asked for comment by members of the media on this latest development. He said, “efforts are still being made to assist as we can through the imminent persons group. And they are very close, I think, to having some semblance of a pathway to free and fair elections.”
Davis said CARICOM does not have the capacity or wherewithal to assist Haiti on its own. ”So if its not Kenya it will be some other major country will come in to assist, CARICOM alone cannot do it. So if Kenya is unable to because of their legal restrictions some other country will more than likely step in.”
According to international reports the Kenyan government intends to appeal the court’s decision.
