Members of the Bahamas Public Services Union (BPSU) at the University of The Bahamas staged a protest on Monday on the school’s campus lamenting that they had not been paid an agreed increases for more than five years. The demonstration was held simultaneously as the university’s 50th anniversary launch event where Prime Minister, the Hon. Philip Davis was in attendance.
BPSU President, Kimsley Ferguson was on hand and spoke with members of the media outlining the grievances of the groups. He said, “we’re gonna agitate until we get the results that we’re looking for, we’re gonna agitate. And so hence we’re here to join in the celebrations today. And we’re gonna be here until he comes out and we can get an audience with him.”
The Prime Minister left the campus without being seen by the protesters. Ferguson lamented, “I’m of the view that its in poor taste. If we were here seeking to get an audience with him for him to at least give us an invite to find out what the issues are and to get it resolved.”
Leader of the Opposition, the Hon. Michael Pintard, who was also at the 50th anniversary event, spoke with Ferguson saying that the would speak to the university’s Chairman on behalf of the union.
Approximately 350 workers took part in the demonstration.
