Prime Minister, the Hon. Philip Davis led a delegation of government officials on a tour of flooded areas in New Providence on Tuesday.
Mr. Davis expressed his satisfaction with the improvement in the level of flooding since the tropical storm passed. He said, “I’m happy to have witnessed it myself. It also gives me the opportunity to see first hand what the challenges are so when we try to seek these solutions of these problems I’ll have an idea what people experience so I can bring that to bear.”
Minister of Works and Family Island Affairs, the Hon. Clay Sweeting was part of the delegation. He revealed that a town hall meeting will be held this week to discuss flood mitigation and receive feedback for citizens.
Sweeting also provided an update on pumping efforts. He said, ” we’ve already pumped over twelves inches of water from Perpall Tract and other areas on the coastal parts of New Providence. And up to last evening we pumped out about 136,000 gallons for the inner city of New Providence not including today.”
The works minister thanked his team for their efforts. “The team of Ministry of Works, I really want to thank them. They’ve been working nonstop pulling forty eight hour days, twenty four hours nonstop,”
Ministry of Works Senior Civil Engineer, Francis Clarke told reporters the flooding from Tropical Storm Imelda was unprecedented. “We had something we could consider perfect conditions for flooding where there was a king tide and prior to the king tide there was a lot of rain. And then with this tropical storm that came in, right, compounded everything even further so that’s what caused most of the flooding.”
The Ministry of Works expects the pumping of flood waters to be complete in three to four days.
