Firefighters were still battling to contain a brush fire on Midshipman Road on the island of Grand Bahama on Tuesday.
Some residents of the area relocated due to low visibility and respiratory difficulty caused by the thick smoke. Resident also attempted to safeguard their homes with water houses and buckets of water.
Police Press Liaison Officer, Superintendent Stephen Dean provided an update on firefighting efforts. He said, “the fire department is still out and about fighting this fire along with its partners in the Midshipman and Chesapeake area. The fire is still burning very lightly however, the smoke is still intense. We’re still urging the public if you don’t need to go into that area please refrain or use a detour route to get around. Please adhere to the speed limit and in areas that are not visible please use your headlights to be able to see exactly that way through that smoke.”
The Superintendent appealed to residents to exercise patience with officers. “We will ensure that we do our endeavor best to avoid any structural damage or even loss of life.”
He asked anyone with equipment that can be used to fight the fire should contact the police department.
