Boating just got better for mariners traversing Central Andros, Mangrove Cay and South Andros. Member of Parliament Leon Lundy said newly installed lights, which serve as channel markers are vital for guiding mariners safely into docking areas, especially at night or low visibility conditions.
Lundy toured South Andros by boat on May 17, along with Cyril Miller of the Port Department and technicians, who gave him an update on the progress of this vital project.
“This upgrade enhances marine safety and supports the daily movement of fishermen, transport vessels, and residents in Mangrove Cay, South and Central Andros,” MP Lundy said.
Russell advised Lundy that old and dysfunctional markers in Driggs Hill were changed out, and three towers were installed that run straight down the coast of South Andros. There are new channel markers also heading into Lisbon Creek. These channel markers are outfitted with lights to guide mariners. They also are equipped with data capabilities that will allow the Port Department to collect and analyze information concerning wind speed and current flows in the area.
Andros resident Kyle Russell noted that people who utilise these channels have been waiting for years to have this much needed infrastructure, which will ultimately increase traffic through the channels and result in increased incomes for many.
After the boat tour, Mr. Lundy also inspected a project underway, authorised by the Water and Sewerage Corporation, to install new water mains that will increase the flow and effectiveness of the water supply in South Andros. Apex Construction has charge of the project, which is expected to be complete in 160 days.
The installation of the markers is being done by Adolpho.
