A ship named T.G. Provider made contact with a bridge in Fresh Creek, Andros over the weekend prompting an inspection by Ministry of Works officials.
Minister of Transport and Member of Parliament for Mangrove Cay and South Andros, the Hon. Leon Lundy was on the scene. He said, “out of an abundance of caution I phoned Mr. Mouzes, the Director of Ministry of Works and I got him an airlift down here so he could come and inspect the bridge.”
The ship was carrying passengers and cars aboard who were visiting the island to attend Crab Fest. The T.G. Provider received docking assistance from another vessel bringing persons to Andros, the Captain Prince.
T.G. Provider Passenger, Monique Johnson spoke with ZNS News following the incident. She said, “we were coming in and apparently the Captain Prince was out to the dock. The were already boarded, I mean, to board off cars and passengers and we were out in the current. What happened, the current here, was pulling the T. G. Provider to the dock. So it only brushed up to the dock but twice and that was it.”
Ministry of Works and Family Island Affairs Director, Robert Mouzas initially feared that the structure sustained damage but found none after an inspection. He said, “I think it was 2019, we had a similar incident, that incident was a lot more severe because the boat hit it with more force with its bow. We had to shut the bridge for, I think, two months. So I was ultimately concerned that it was another incident like that. But having looked at the bridge now, it has been no damage at all.”
According to officials the bridge is safe for use.
