Acting Prime Minister and Minister of Tourism, Investments and Aviation, the Hon. Chester Cooper recently gave an update on the progress of the redevelopment of the international airport on the island of Grand Bahama.
Cooper told ZNS News that preliminary work is ongoing and construction will begin soon. “We want to ensure that we’ve lined up the ducks and when its starts its going to move quickly. We’re looking forward to the completion of a new terminal as well as the capacity to have the return of preclearance to the island of Grand Bahama. But there’s a lot of technical work involved that is being done and you should see progress very soon,” he said.
The Minister added, “we’ve begun a lot of the preliminary work. The demolition of the interiors of the old US terminal. We have been presented with some significant opportunities around cargo so we’re recalibrating in terms of what we do with that building now given the presentation of the new possibilities and the opportunities to develop Grand Bahama as a cargo hub. These are very active conversations.”
Cooper also revealed some of the features of the new airport. He said, “it will be elevated to really protect against flooding and there will be some flood attenuation basins, what they call it technically. There is gonna be some run off and some trenching so ensure that the flooding is managed.
Construction of the new Grand Bahama airport terminal is expected to be complete in 2025.
