The Bahamas National Independence Secretariat thanks all Bahamians throughout the country and the world who participated in 242 Day.
February 24, also known as 242 Day, is the first opportunity in the new year to show patriotism and launch celebrations leading up to Independence on July 10.
First implemented during the country’s Golden Jubilee of Independence in 2023, this year served as the third annual 242 Day. Gold, aquamarine and black – the colors of the Bahamian flag, emblazoned buildings and homes, as Bahamians everywhere came together to celebrate their beloved country.
The term 242 refers to the country’s dialing code since 1996, and serves as a source of unity and pride for Bahamians.
Displays of Bahamian culture and pride ahead of Independence Day are particularly important, as they provide opportunities for school students to participate in patriotic festivities during the school term. Independence falls during the summer break. Children throughout the country also participated in 242 Day 2025.
