A 5.4 magnitude earthquake hit Jamaica on Monday causing damage to buildings and property.
It was previously reported that the government of The Bahamas was refusing to evacuate Bahamian students on the island who wanted to return home in the wake of the earthquake. President of the Bahamian Students Association at the University of the West Indies – Mona , Stephen Smith is refuting those claims. He told ZNS News that while student initially wanted to return to The Bahamas they accepted assessments by university officials to continue operations at the school. Smith said that the students are emotionally distressed by recovering daily.
Prime Minister, the Hon. Philip Davis sent a voice note to Bahamians students saying, “while some are suggesting airlift to The Bahamas. It seemed to us that if school continues to function and there’s no virtual alternative. As long as the situation is not catastrophic it is probably in your best interest to stay put. I do caution you as follows however, follow the directions of the authorities, take every precaution. Stay in touch with the news, with local authorities and our Consul in Jamaica.”
There have been no casualties reported due to the earthquake.
