Power issues on the island of Grand Bahama has impacted the delivery of service from the Bahamas Telecommunications Company (BTC).
BTC Executive Manager of the Northern Bahamas, Dominic Petty explained the challenges the company has been experiencing. He said, “once the power went off the generators did not necessarily kick in as they should. We actually had the teams actually addressing the generators as it relates to replacing some batteries in order for the generators to transition from the city power onto the generators.”
Petty also outlined some of the measures BTC intends to take to prevent future disruptions. “We did an overall attack on all of our towers, we have thirty five within Grand Bahama, just to ensure that we do have consistency of service should we have interruptions on power,” Petty said.
The Executive Manager also compared the current issues to those experienced after Hurricane Dorian. He said, “what happened during Hurricane Dorian obviously would take a longer time to actually get the network up and running. What happened a few days ago just a matter of doing some changes and upgrading one or two things, which we are in the process of.”
Petty said BTC tries to make its network as resilient as possible for customers.
