Minister of Labour and the Public Service, the Hon. Pia Glover-Rolle led off the Legislative Reform Town Hall Meeting in Grand Bahama, explaining to a cross-section of residents the National Tripartite Council’s efforts to bring a more balanced, modern and inclusive labour framework for the country.
The Town Hall Meeting was held on Wednesday, October 8, 2025 at the Winn Building, Downtown, and attended by a cross-section of residents who were apprised of the proposed recommendations to the Employment Act and Industrial Relations Act.
It was the second in a series of forums planned for residents throughout the country. The first was held in New Providence on October 7.
Minister Glover-Rolle noted that the conversation was an historic and nationally important national one as labour laws affect everyone — employees, union representatives, employer confederations, civil society stakeholders as well as the general public.
She further revealed that the reform process began two years ago with the National Tripartite Council, which is the body that represents the Government, the employers and the employees, who conducted the foundational work before it was brought to the public.
“This is a big step in our process. The process doesn’t end here, but we’re almost at the finish line and that’s a very fulfilling position to be in,” Minister Glover-Rolle said.
Among the 22 recommendations being proposed under the Employment Act is the extension of maternity leave; the introduction of paternity leave; the institution of mental wellness leave without pay; breastfeeding stations in workplaces where practical and feasible; and maternity leave for mothers legally adopting a child.
Another recommendation is a one-hour paid break for every eight hours in a work day, except in the case of large hotel properties.
Human Resources Strategists Cherylee Pinder and Marilyn Braynen, along with Legal Consultant for the Ministry of Labour and the Public Service Keenan Johnson offered further explanation on the proposed changes, fielded questions from the captivated audience and took their suggestions under advisement.
Ministry of Labour Executive Director of Special Projects Robert Farquharson also delivered a virtual presentation on the 11 recommendations to the Industrial Relations Act.
Those logged on virtually from Sweetings Cay, Bimini, Abaco and The Berry Islands also shared their views and asked questions.
Minister for Grand Bahama, the Hon. Ginger Moxey and Senator Kirkland Russell were also in attendance.
