Established in 1936, the government-owned savings bank continues to serve as a trusted financial institution, providing secure and accessible banking services to Bahamians —particularly in Grand Bahama and the Family Islands, where commercial banking options are limited. Operated through the Bahamas Postal Service on behalf of the Ministry of Finance, the savings bank remains a vital resource for residents seeking a simple and reliable way to grow their savings.
Despite its long-standing history, many Bahamians remain unaware that savings accounts are available at post offices throughout the country. Unlike commercial banks, the government-owned savings bank does not offer loans but instead focuses on providing a secure, fee-free savings option. This service is especially beneficial in the Family Islands, where banking alternatives are scarce.
One of the bank’s key advantages is its transparent, fee-free structure. “For us here at the post office, we don’t have any hidden fees—what you put in is what you’ll get out,” said Ericka McIntosh, Senior Dispatcher. “We offer a very high interest rate, one of the highest when it comes to savings, which is 5%,” she added.
This ensures that customers’ savings grow steadily, and whatever amount is deposited will be reflected on the anniversary date of the account opening. Interest is calculated on the anniversary date of account opening, with a maximum earning cap of $6,000, though customers are free to deposit any amount beyond that limit.
The savings bank offers three types of accounts: single, joint, and group/organisation accounts. To open an account, individuals must be at least 12 years old (or have a trustee if under 12) and provide a minimum deposit of $5, along with two government-issued IDs. Upon approval, customers receive a passbook containing their signature number for easy tracking of transactions.
For those in Grand Bahama, accounts can be opened at the Main Post Office in Freeport or the Eight Mile Rock Branch in Pinedale. Across the Family Islands, post offices provide the same reliable savings services, ensuring Bahamians have a secure and accessible financial option wherever they reside.
