The Ministry of Education & Technical & Vocational Training welcomed over 80 new Teachers, Teacher Aides, Guidance Counselors school and Attendance Officers for the upcoming academic year.
A two-day orientation was held at the Stephen Dillet Primary School on August 20 – 22. Director of Education, Dominique McCartney-Russell, delivered welcome remarks and Minister Glenys Hanna-Martin presented the keynote address at the opening.
The Education Minister welcomed the new hires and thanked them for their commitment to the children of the nation.
“Education is not a job, but a calling of the highest order. It is the foundation where character is built and confidence is engendered,” she said. “We do not, therefore, accept and indeed, we reject, the notion that the quality of public education is inferior.”
The Minister told the new hires that in keeping with the government’s objectives as it relates to education, all of the necessary tools, training and mentoring opportunities, safe practices and other Human resources issues would be addressed during the orientation sessions.
She also encouraged them to be open-minded and cognizant of the fact that students come from varying backgrounds and learning capabilities, which requires patience and understanding.
“Be prepared to anticipate the colourful array of students that exist in our country. Help them to value our country through your example as you also play a role as Ambassadors for our country. You also offer vestiges of safety and security.
“Your classrooms are living creative spaces. But stock up on patience, as you will face challenges, especially in the face of social media. We know that this is not an easy undertaking but you have the full support of the Ministry and the government to carry out your duties.”
Presentations during the two-day event included topics such as: Safe Practices for Teacher and Student Engagement; Adapting to School Culture and Professionalism; Polished to Perform: The Professional Code of Catwalk; and School Management: “Mapping out the Ministry of Education’s Policies and Procedures.” They were also briefed on other areas such as Technology across the Ministry, The Teachers Handbook and The National High School Diploma.
