Progressive Liberal Party (PLP) National Chairman, the Hon. Fred Mitchell has revealed that there is keen interest from potential candidates to run in the next general election.
Mitchell said, “the avalanche of people who are interested in running for office is good in one thing because, you know, you need a thousand voice to content and out of that you can get those people who are fit and proper to run. So there’s no dearth of people asking to run but there are procedures and right now the only, sort of, open seats where there’s no PLP is where there is no PLP incumbent, so to speak, that is the three seats that I’ve mentioned.”
In April, Member of Parliament for North Eleuthera, the Hon. Sylvanus Petty told reporters that he will not run for re-election. It has also been reported that neither the Member of Parliament for Fort Charlotte, the Hon. Alfred Sears and the Member of Parliament for MICAL, the Hon. Basil McIntosh intend to seek re-election.
On whether more current members of parliament will bow out Mitchell said, “we don’t know what’s gonna happen in the future. But as of now all incumbent are continuing to do their work and the party’s continuing to do their assessment. And of course the party has said that everybody has to undergo renomination including incumbents, so everybody’s starting de novo before the candidates committee and will be judged on the work they have done over the term.”
The PLP Chairman maintains that there will not be an earlier election and appealed to citizens to pay attention to Labour Day when the party intends to show its strength in numbers on the various parades. “We intend to show the country that there is a Brave blue wave that is coming. That is will continue to bring a promise of stability, of management of the public purse and to uplift the ordinary man.”
