Prime Minister, the Hon. Philip Davis says that government is committed to addressing casual labour. Davis’ comments came while he was in Grand Bahama attending the unveiling ceremony for the Grand Bahama Shipyard $600 million expansion project.
Davis said, “the issue of casual workers has been weighing on my mind for several years. He continued, “as a casual worker you will not be able to go to the bank, for example, and borrow funds to buy a home. Buying a home stimulates construction. They will not be able to borrow monies to further their education which stagnates further development.”
The Prime Minister also said, “we are looking at whether or not this will require legislative intervention and how that will be done recognizing though that, you know, employment contracts are personal to the employer and to the employee and there’s very little that a government to do to intervene save but to perhaps develop minimum standards as we’ve done in the Employment Act.”
Chief Executive Officer of the Royal Caribbean Group, Jason Liberty and Chief Executive Officer of the Carnival Corporation, Josh Weinstein both endorsed the Prime Minister’s pronouncements.
