Press Release
Since its formation in September 2000, the Sister Sister Breast Cancer Support Group has been a lifeline for women and families across The Bahamas facing breast cancer. What began with just fifteen members has now grown to a network of more than 500, providing counseling, support, and financial assistance while fostering hope and resilience.
The group’s planned events for Breast Cancer Awareness Month begin on October 3 with the Ministry of National Security featuring survivor stories. On October 4, the organization will join the CIBC Race for the Cure at Goodman’s Bay at 6:30 am, followed by a Breast Cancer Awareness showcase at the Mall at Marathon from 2 to 4 pm On October 15, Sister Sister will participate in a special service at Restoration Kingdom where a survivor will share her journey, leading into the Restoration Kingdom Gospel Dinner Concert on October 18, which will support Sister Sister’s outreach and programs. The month’s observances will culminate on October 23 with the Health and Wellness Conference at Atlantis, reinforcing the importance of education, prevention, and continued community support.
These events highlight not only the courage of survivors but also the strength of a community united in the fight against breast cancer. Each gathering underscores the importance of awareness, early detection, and ongoing support – critical steps in saving lives and giving hope to families across The Bahamas.
In addition to the planned events, Sister Sister has launched a creative fundraising and awareness initiative – “Donate Your Bra Size.” Supporters are encouraged to give an amount that matches their bra size (for example, $34 for size 34), a symbolic reminder of the importance of breast health. The initiative aims to spark conversation, encourage donations, and direct attention to early detection.
The campaign also includes a mammography drive and educational outreach on the importance of breast health. Sister Sister is providing clear guidance on when and how women should schedule mammograms, as well as promoting the habit of self-breast examinations from an early age – even encouraging teens to learn and practice this life-saving routine. To further spread the message, high schools have been invited to take part in a creative challenge, producing TikToks, cheers, and other student-led projects focused on breast cancer awareness and prevention.
Pushing forward with the mandate of “Empowering Women to Become Conquerors,” Sister Sister focuses on the holistic well-being of survivors – addressing physical, mental, and spiritual needs. Their signature emblem, two sisters united by the pink ribbon, reflects the unbreakable bonds of care and encouragement that drive the organization forward.
As Sister Sister continues its mission of “Women Helping Others,” the organization reminds the public that no one has to face breast cancer alone. Through shared stories, community outreach, and compassionate care, Sister Sister remains a symbol of strength and solidarity for all who are touched by the disease.
