The Sweeting’s Cay Primary School and Homework Centre was officially reopened on Wednesday after the campus was destroyed by Hurricane Dorian in 2019. Students from the island have had to commute to mainland Grand Bahama to attend school. Currently there are three students enrolled.
A ribbon cutting ceremony held on the island was attended by Minister for Grand Bahama, the Hon. Ginger Moxey and FNM Candidate for East Grand Bahama, Kwasi Thompson.
During her remarks Moxey said, “today marks a significant and long awaited milestone for Sweeting’s Cay. For seven years residents have carried a burden no community should bear. But you remained steadfast in advocating for your school’s reopening reminded that the school is the heart of your community and today we begin to restore that heart. This soft opening marks the return of what Hurricane Dorian took from you. It brings back laughter, learning and hope.”
Kwasi Thompson spoke with ZNS News on the sidelines of the event. He expressed excitement for the reopening which he has been advocating for while in Parliament. He said, “this was a long time in coming and those three students who this school is opening up for, they deserve to have their own school. They would have to wake up every morning and take a ferry to McLean’s Town in order to attend school and then take another ferry to come back. There would be times when the water was rough, times when there would be issues. They would have to wake up extra early to take the ferry and so we’ve been advocating for this school for some time.”
Also in attendance were officials from the Ministry of Education and Technical and Vocational Training.
