The newly-elected Licensed Practical Nursing (LPN) Student Council at Terreve University College was charged to lead with confidence and boldness as they made history on June 19, 2025.
Permanent Secretary in the Ministry for Grand Bahama Joel Lewis gave the directive during the installation ceremony at the Belinda Wilson Convention Center.
The Licensed Practical Nursing Program was launched at Terreve in January 2025 after Minister of Health, the Hon. Dr. Michael Darville led a national initiative to partner with tertiary institutions to train a new generation of nursing professionals and modernize nursing education practice in The Bahamas.
The first cohort of 50 students has already completed five months of intensive academic and clinic training.
The newly-elected council members are tasked with fostering unity, advocacy and professional development among the LPN cohort.
Permanent Secretary Lewis, while bringing remarks on behalf of Minister for Grand Bahama, the Hon. Ginger Moxey during the ceremony, told the nursing student council that theirs was a vital role.
“As you prepare to lead your peers, I encourage you to seize this moment, step into your roles with confidence and lead with boldness and by example,” he said.
Mr. Lewis told the new council members that Grand Bahama is in the midst of a transformative journey and they are stepping into roles that require more than innovation, but also heart, strength and commitment to serve.
“Authentic leadership is servant leadership. It is not about being the loudest voice in the room, it is about guidance, relationship and problem solving,” he said.
He also congratulated Terreve for reaching such an important milestone.
“I am grateful to the president of Terreve University College, Mr. Terrance Archer, for his leadership, vision and steadfast commitment to providing opportunities for residents to access quality education,” he said.
Permanent Secretary Lewis also extended congratulations to the faculty and staff that their investment in the students, time and timeless work behind the scene has not gone unnoticed.
“Thank you for instilling purpose, passion and professionalism in our future healthcare professionals,” he said.
To the new nursing cohort, he noted that while their journey is just beginning, their impact has already started and the Commonwealth of The Bahamas needs them.
