The Urban Renewal Authority (URA) witnessed significant growth in its second year of Speech Competition finals in the primary, junior high and senior divisions.
This year, the contest, which is open to students in public and private schools, drew nearly 30 contenders — all vying for the top spot in their division.
The first round of competitions kicked off with the primary school category on March 13 at Freeport Great Faith Ministry when seven young orators went head-to-head in an impressive battle.
Rounds two and three were held at Freeport Bible Church on March 14, with nine young speakers taking part in the junior division and 10 seniors in the high school category.
The winner of each category moves on to contend the Ministry of Housing and Urban Renewal Authority National Competition in New Providence on March 27th.
URA Grand Bahama Island Acting Deputy Director Lloyd Grant was pleased with the overwhelming number of contenders this year and is even more confident of a win at the nationals next week.
“Guidance counsellors, parents, everyone came together to make this happen. We have a good mix this time around and so we’re looking forward to a winner to come out of Grand Bahama for the nationals,” he said
Each student was awarded for participation, and the top performers received medals.
