A 17-year-old boy died in an alleged drowning incident on Sunday in the South Seas community.
According to police, the boy was swimming in a canal along with three other teen boys at the rear of the South Seas gated community on Sunday afternoon when the victim began to struggle to stay afloat.
Police Inspector Gerard Culmer was on the scene where he provided details of the incident. He said, “two of the friends tried to assist; however, they were not able to assist. They went and they contacted police control room. Police control room asked the assistance of the Royal Bahamas Defence Force, who deployed a vessel.”
Culmer appealed to the public to be sure of their swimming skills when entering bodies of water. “If you can, go with somebody who you trust and be careful of the tide. The tide shifts at any given time, so just be very conscious of that. Also, you just want to be conscious of the time. The time and quiet beaches, you don’t want to be in a situation where you lose track of time, it get dark and then you can’t see where shore is or it’s not very visible.”
