Bahamas Power and Light Chief Executive Officer, Toni Seymour appeared at a press briefing at the Office of the Prime Minister on Thursday where she outlined plans to provide additional power generation for the island of Abaco.
This move is meant to improve the reliability of electricity on the mainland Abaco and the surrounding cays. Currently two units at the Wilson City Power Station are undergoing maintenance with two others in operation. Seymour said, “in addition to our technicians on the ground working on the two units that are currently unavailable we are installing generation on all of the main Abaco cays. The generator was already installed in Man-O-War Cay, that is scheduled to be tied in and expected to be in service by early next week. We’re installing two additional units on Hope Town and that will supply all of the load demand on Hope Town which is one of the larger cays and we’re also installing unit on Guana Cay. So what that does is it gives us some relief at the Wilson City Station if we do lose an engine or if the submarine cables are cut by boats etc., the cays will be self sustaining.”
The BPL CEO also addressed the impact recent wildfires have had on BPL assets and power transmission. “The Abaco Volunteer Fire Department along with our T&D teams have been working around the clock to ensure that we minimize the effect to the T&D network and as it is safe to do so we go ahead and repair and replace any damaged polls and restore supply as quickly and as safely as we possibly can.”
